Our Whole Lives -

Sexuality & Spirituality Classes

To register for the next class, click here

At Berkeley Community Church, we believe that sexuality is a gift from God and when we talk about it outside of the "Spirit," we miss the point!  Our culture does a great job of "missing the point" on Sexuality and Spirituality.  In response to our culture's teachings about sexuality, we offer a program to counter the damaging messages that bombard us and our families about human sexuality.   The curriculum is called Our Whole Lives  (check out the OWL assumptions here and parental information here).  It is an amazing program!  It is a comprehensive sexuality education grounded in the values of 1) self-worth, 2) safety and health, 3) respect and responsibility, and 4) justice and equality.

Given the lack of formalized education our children receive about their changing bodies laid alongside the constant barrage of signals and innuendo from culture, I cannot speak highly enough about the importance of creating an environment for this conversation with our kids.  Our goal at Berkeley Church is help you, as parents, develop a format and framework for becoming a parent to whom your children can turn with their questions, doubts, curiosities, and alarm about their developing sexuality.  Knowledge is power.  OWL programming is literally life-changing.

Cost, Books, Classes

The cost of the facilitated program is $150 per child.

This includes:

     * the parent orientation,

     *  the nine child sessions,

     * the parent guide book,

     * and the supplemental book, It's Perfectly Normal

The two facilitators, Rev. Tamara Boynton and Dave Claypool, have been trained and certified as OWL facilitators.

Scholarships and sliding scales are always available.  Please talk to Rev. Tamara to make arrangements for these.  The maximum class size for 5th-6th grade OWL is 12 kids.  Ideally, we would have a fairly even distribution of gender identity.   Please feel free to spread the word about the program so people who want to know more have the opportunity to find out about the program and ask questions.

We do not have to accept the education of our "I'm Sexy and I Know It" culture when it comes to teaching our children about this very powerful, very normal, very sacred, very human, very holy experience of sexuality.

Parents:  Not "The Talk" but an Ongoing Conversation communicating your love and values.

List of Topics:

Sexuality & Values, Family & Friends, Puberty, GLBTQ, Lovemaking & Reproduction, Sexual Health, Communication, Decision-Making.

We are currently registering for a 5-6th grade class to begin after Easter.  If you (or your child) is in another age group but would like to register for a class, please let us know and together we can begin filling the class.  Classes are always co-ed and have required minimums in order to be scheduled.
